Many years, many dreams.
Some day I would like to recreate the boat that
that my great grandfather John Parkin owned.
But, how?
How could I find enough information?
More dreams, I want to, but how?
What's this?
A boat TALLY HO! For sale?
May, 1999 add in Wooden Boat magazine.
Could it be? Make a telephone call, another TALLY HO ?
Should I buy it, should I buy it?
It isn't the same boat, it has history, good pedigree, but it
isn't the same boat.
Seeing this boat for sale really got me to get serious about
fulfilling my dream.

Too many differences
TALLY HO
Scrapped I think in 1922

Gaff rigged
TALLY HO!

I won't buy it, it isn't the same boat, I won't be happy

What I Knew about TALLY HO
She was 36' long and was scrapped about 1922.
The mast became a flag pole and was destroyed in the 1938
hurricane, other parts were in the boat house which was also lost in
the hurricane.
I helped dad junk numerous parts when cleaning out uncle Joe's
house after his death in the mid 1950's. I wanted to keep all the stuff,
but it had to be tossed out, I did keep a few items.
The mast was 10" diameter, I measured the spider band before
junking it and never forgot that number.
I kept a mast hoop which is 13 " diameter which is the proper size
for a 10" mast.
Name board from the original boat
The dimensions and some
wear marks indicate this was
located in the companionway.
Information found from family members

8 more photos, some photos taken at right angles to the boat.
These photos are a vital source of information.

" The settee from her was in uncle Joe's house it was really fancy
with plush upholstery."-Dick Heys. This is an indication that the
boat was originally built as a yacht, not a work boat.

"My dad said he could stand up in the cabin, and he was 6'2" tall"
- Eric Hutchins. A vital dimension for verification of depth
dimensions.

"They bought her near Hyannis" - Eric

"The steering gear and wheel was in the boat house, the wheel
was about 30" diameter." - Eric
All the photos have supplied
information about TALLY HO,
one bit I derived from this is
the fact that she had a canvas
covered deck.
Detail information about
skylight, companionway
cover and cabin doors.
Cockpit detail showing staving,
seat, step plates, cavel, main
sheet horse and block (I have
that actual block).

This photo shows my
grandmother Lillian Parkin
holding my dad Eric, we are
guessing this photo was taken
Easter Sunday 1918. Note the
boat is not rigged for sailing.
Valuable photo for dimensions, also a hint of the structural
deterioration taking place as evidenced by the flattening of the
shear line. I have taken care to insure strength to minimize the
re-occurrence of this problem.
